What does our local population look like?
Central West London Community Services provides a range of community and in patient services to a population of around 610,000. Populations in the three boroughs share some characteristics:
There are also, however, some differences between the boroughs.
What do you see as being the the biggest challenges and benefits facing us as an organisation due to our diverse population?
- they are younger than most as compared with England and London as a whole,
- they are mobile, particularly in young adult age groups,
- they are diverse with high numbers of people being born outside the UK,
- they are densely populated,
- health inequalities are evident, between people living in the most affluent and the most deprived areas
- the main causes of morbidity and premature mortality are circulatory diseases and cancer; there are also high rates of mental ill-health.
There are also, however, some differences between the boroughs.
- Hammersmith and Fulham is a Spearhead local authority in recognition of its relatively poor health and deprivation indicators. The borough also includes Wormwood Scrubbs prison and the heath care of offenders placed there is a responsibility of the NHS
- In Kensington and Chelsea the health divide appears to be widening as people become healthier in track with London as a whole, but health in the more affluent areas is improving more rapidly thus widening the divide. There are challenges engaging with the whole population, a significant proportion of which do not use NHS services.
- Westminster has high numbers of homeless people and those living in temporary accommodation, with the associated adverse impact on health. There are high numbers of older people living alone and the daily influx of commuters and tourists swell the population considerably.
